BRUCE STERLING
As the editor of Mirrorshades, the definitive document of cyberpunk, and the unofficial spokeman of the movement which popularised virtual reality, novelist and critic Bruce Sterling needs no introduction from Doors. More recently, his preoccupations have centred on the environment, and he is the leader of the Viridians, an online discussion community that connects 'eco' and 'info.' In his own words, Sterling sees global warming as "a design and engineering problem" which will be solved only when a 'desirable' (to consumers) solution is found: "The world needs a new, unnatural, seductive, mediated, glamorous Green. A Viridian Green, if you will." In order to achieve sustainability, Sterling recommends in addition to making 'green' mean 'glamour' vastly increased leisure time, and consumption of as many 'immaterial products' as possible. At Doors 6, he outlines the Viridian vision of the future.
