FARMAX: Excursions on Density

The Netherlands has the highest population density in the world, with 350 people to every square kilometre. Yet it is characterised by low-density developments typically consisting of low-cost housing, low-rent offices and other elements, "lightweight urban matter lacking a clear form of organisation" which gives the whole country a uniform profile. Using a minimum amount of text and maximum number of illustrations, this book attempts to rethink the Dutch land- and cityscape: "Farmax essentially means compressing a population vertically and horizontally so as to give that population more space." It argues for a less uniform distribution of density - more open 'nature' areas alternating with 'stacked landscapes,' multi-level, mixed-use developments (an idea put into practise in the Dutch Pavilion at Expo 2000).
